T-shirts, tank tops or a sleeveless evening dress can cause discomfort for some people who suffer from severe excess skin in the area of the upper arms. Those affected sometimes feel so strongly disturbed about the appearance of their upper arms that they avoid short-sleeved tops and hide their arms in loose, long-sleeved clothing. Furthermore, the excessive skin and tissue can also cause limitations in everyday life in addition to the aspect of aesthetics.
In most cases, the excess of skin and tissue is caused by a successful large weight loss. Those affected actually want to enjoy their new body and the body feeling, but the consequences that they can no longer actively influence, such as flabby arms, prevent them from experiencing the newly gained quality of life in the way they before imagined during the long process of weight loss.
With an arm lift the excess tissue and sagging skin can be reduced and tightened so that patients can enjoy their new body with shapely arms.

In some cases, the upper arm lift is also desired due to age-related loss of elasticity. Depending on the initial condition of the patient and the degree and distribution of excess tissue and skin, the optimal choice of arm lift method has to be made by an experienced surgeon. In particular, the correct selection of the incision by the plastic surgeon is crucial for the ideal result. Previous liposuction may also be necessary.
With this operation, a distinction can be made between an incision in the armpit area and one in the upper arm area. An incision in the armpit has the advantage that only a small, well-hidden scar is left behind, which is rarely visible in the natural skin fold. The disadvantage of this method is that only small amounts of excess skin and tissue can be removed and that this method is not suitable for patients with pronounced excess skin and tissue. In these patients, the incision is made above the elbow and runs up to the armpit. This method allows the removal of larger amounts of excess skin and tissue, but it leaves a visible scar on the inside of the arm, which can be reduced to a minimum with good scar care.

As with all surgical procedures, an arm lift involves certain risks that cannot be ruled out. A distinction must be made here between the general risks of general anesthesia, intolerance to medication, including local anesthesia, and the specific risks of an arm lift.
In addition to the general risks of an operation, the following specific risks are to be assessed as increased in an arm lift operation:
You should wait at least until after you have taken off the compression garment to do strenuous activities that put additional strain on the surgical area.
Depending on the complexity of the procedure, you should expect a rest period of up to two weeks.
After the procedure a special compression garment has to be worn for about six weeks. This supports the healing process and also to achieve the optimal result in that it prevents the formation of dents and bumps. With an upper arm lift, swelling and small hematomas must be expected especially at the beginning. Furthermore, good scar care is important to prevent wound healing disorders. The result of an upper arm lift is possible at a very early stage, since the excess skin has been removed and the new, tighter line of the upper arm can be clearly seen. Nevertheless, the assessment of the end result should be delayed at least until after the compression garment has been removed.
A hospital stay of one day should be expected. The operation takes about 1-2 hours.
