ENDOSCOPIC SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY

The endoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, or EGS for short, in contrast to gastric bypass or gastric sleeve reduction, is a new type of procedure that does not require surgical intervention. In this procedure, the stomach is being folded in during a gastroscopy using a special suture technique in order to achieve a drastic reduction in stomach volume (by around 70-80 percent). Like the gastric sleeve, this method is based on the principle of food restriction.

For Whom is an Endoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Suitable and How is it Performed?

The endoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is suitable for patients who have an obesity grade of 1 and therefore do not have a pronounced degree of overweight, or for patients who refuse surgical intervention. The easy access and low risk of intervention makes it a durable alternative to the gastric balloon, which is not as sustainable as the material can wear out. Since EGS is a very new procedure, health insurance companies currently are not covering the costs.

What do I have to consider after the operation?

Although a major advantage of the procedure is that the patient does not require post-operative care as with other surgical procedures, we are convinced that support from nutritional coaching will support the weight loss success and weight maintenance in the long term significantly. For this reason, we provide a tailored nutritional concept after a stomach reduction using the EGS method.
